Leicester College Campus

A multi-million pound makeover for the Abbey Campus at Leicester College. As well as the campus, there are plans to rejuvinate the Memory Wharf and Grand Union Canal areas to the rear of the site.

British Waterways are involved in this plan which will include apartments, restaurants, bars, retail and other leisure facilities. This will link in with the Leicester Waterside SPD for the area and also provide a physical link between the city centre and the Science Park, Wolsey Island and Abbey Meadows.

I have just finished my teaching placement at the Abbey Park campus - as many people will know, the facilities there are absolutely appalling. Although I am a little sceptical of these kind of massive commercial regeneration plans - in terms of (e.g.) the division of the existing strong community spirit - I think the long-term benefits for the health, safety and wellbeing of the Leicester city students will be vastly improved (it couldn't possibly become worse). Research has recently shown how these types of investments improve not only enrolments but also achievement levels too. Good luck with the scheme.

Thank you for your comments Ursie.

Leicester College Campus redevelopments are well underway now.

Hopefully the result will create a better environment for students and longer term, provide high-quality new homes and facilities for all.
